This week, Landcarers across the country celebrated Landcare Week. This annual campaign aims to raise awareness and ignite a powerful sense of unity among individuals, groups and organisations devoted to restoring, protecting and enhancing both the natural environment and the vital agriculture sector within their local communities.

Be inspired by the group case studies we have been posting each day this week on our social media channels.

You can also read what the Hon. Tanya Plibersek MP and Senator the Hon. Murray Watt had to say about the Landcare movement below.

Landcare Australia Panel at Garma Festival

At the 2023 GARMA festival, Landcare Australia’s Chairman, Doug Humann AM, hosted a panel discussion centred on the theme of Connection, highlighting the links between First Nations people and Landcare initiatives.

The panellists shared their personal experiences, stories, and insights, illustrating how their First Nations heritage serves as a guiding force in their Landcare work. They emphasised the importance of maintaining connections with the land, sea, water and people as a means to ensure sustainable practices for future generations. The discussion highlighted the essential role of collaboration between Indigenous custodians and non-Indigenous stakeholders in achieving meaningful and lasting environmental outcomes.
ANU Landcare Webinar on Farm Dam Restoration

Join Sustainable Farms and Landcare Australia for the latest research results and resources on enhancing farm dams for production and biodiversity.

Michelle Young, Director of Sustainable Farms, will introduce the science and showcase the suite of farm dams resources that have been developed to support farmers with the best evidence and information based on four years of research.

Dr Shane Norrish, CEO of Landcare Australia, will discuss the Farm Dam Restoration Project that Landcare Australia is delivering nationally, to ensure that regional communities can see first-hand the positive impacts of quality farm dam restoration projects.

Researchers from Sustainable Farms will also share new research results from our four-year Farm Dams Study.
Funding from the Saving Our Species Program

The Saving Native Species Program is providing $224.5 million over four years to support the recovery of Australia’s unique plants, animals, and ecological communities.

The Saving Native Species (Priority Species) grant opportunity aims to put the 110 priority species on track for an improved trajectory (Target 1, Action Plan). For this opportunity, grants of between $20,000 and $500,000 are available.

Applications for this grant opportunity are now open and will close on Thursday, 7 September 2023. Organisations may apply for this opportunity if they meet the eligibility criteria (are an eligible entity, have an eligible project, and have eligible expenditure).

Landcare Farming Webinar: All you need to know about Farm-scale Natural Capital Accounting

Farm-scale natural capital accounts pave the way for rewarding farmers for nature-positive actions and sharing the cost-burden (above the production benefits) of maintaining or improving natural ecosystems on their farms.

Tune in to this webinar on 7 September at 11am AEST. Our expert speakers will introduce the accounts and step through their development and the data contained within them. They will demonstrate the potential of the accounts to help inform farm management, demonstrate environmental performance, and document transparency in the supply chain.
Innovative Partnership for Soil Moisture Mapping

Harden Murrumburrah Landcare Group (HMLG) has been working closely with CSIRO scientists to map the soil moisture profile in their region, resulting in increased productivity and sustainability for local farming enterprises.

β€œThe progressive data from these probes will inform the success of our current grazing management and to an extent where we can change that management,” said producer and member of HMLG, Michael Baldry.

By understanding the moisture profile of their property, producers in the region like Michael are able to determine the water requirements of their crops more accurately and optimise their crop management. The data produced via the moisture probes also aids in crop selection and rotation, allowing producers to optimise yields, reduce the risk of crop failure due to water stress, and strategically rotate crops to allow the soil to recover and maintain its fertility.
